-
- Media Convert (invoked from the command line as
- _m_e_d_i_a_c_o_n_v_e_r_t(_1)), is a new digital media file conversion
- tool providing a simple to use user interface for creating
- movie, audio, and image files from other movie, audio or
- image files. Media Convert replaces the tool ``Movie
- Master'' which was introduced in the IRIS Digital Media
- Tools version 5.4 (WebForce 1.0).
-
- For more details, consult the manual page, or the on-line
- help which is available from within the tool.

- IRIS Digital Media Tools 5.5 includes several movie and
- sound file conversion tools which have similar but not
- identical capabilities. Here is a brief summary of the
- capabilities of each tool:
-
- +o ssssffffccccoooonnnnvvvveeeerrrrtttt((((1111)))):::: Command-line tool for converting between
- different sound file formats. Supports AIFF, AIFF-C
- (uncompressed), Sun/NeXT, and Microsoft RIFF WAVE. Does
- not support MPEG-1 audio bitstream files.
-
- +o aaaaiiiiffffccccccccoooommmmpppprrrreeeessssssss((((1111)))),,,, aaaaiiiiffffccccddddeeeeccccoooommmmpppprrrreeeessssssss((((1111)))): Command-line tools
- for converting between compressed and uncompressed
- AIFF-C formats.

-
-
- +o ddddmmmmccccoooonnnnvvvveeeerrrrtttt((((1111)))):::: Command-line tool for converting between
- different sound, movie, and image file formats. Offers
- a superset of the functionality provided by the older
- makemovie(1) command, and is intended as a replacement
- for makemovie. Supports the same set of file formats
- as MediaConvert.
-
- +o mmmmaaaakkkkeeeemmmmoooovvvviiiieeee((((1111)))):::: Command-line tool for converting between
- different movie file formats. Supports SGI Movie and
- QuickTime (including Cinepak) movies. Also supports
- sequences of SGI image files (formats supported by the
- SGI ImageVision Library) and AIFF, AIFF-C sound files.
-
- +o MMMMeeeeddddiiiiaaaaCCCCoooonnnnvvvveeeerrrrtttt((((1111)))):::: Graphical tool for converting between
- numbered sequences of images, sound files, and movie
- files. Internally, MediaConvert invokes dmconvert(1)
- for the actual file conversion operation.
-
- +o MMMMoooovvvviiiieeeeCCCCoooonnnnvvvveeeerrrrtttt((((1111)))):::: Graphical tool for converting between
- numbered sequences of images and video-only movie
- files. Supports SGI and QuickTime movies. Supports all
- of the image file formats supported by the SGI
- ImageVision Library, along with a large number of
- additional image file formats supported by the SDSC
- image library. Will read MPEG movies, but will not
- write MPEG movies. Will read QuickTime Cinepak movies,
- but will not write QuickTime Cinepak movies. The main
- functionality offered by MovieConvert but not
- MediaConvert is support for a variety of additional
- image file formats. A key missing piece of
- functionality is support for movie sound tracks.
-
- +o MMMMoooovvvviiiieeeeMMMMaaaakkkkeeeerrrr((((1111)))):::: Graphical tool for editting movie files.
- Not primarily intended as a movie conversion tool,
- however there is an Export Options panel which allows
- user to set various export file format parameters.
- Tool supports SGI Movie and QuickTime (including
- Cinepak) movies. Will read MPEG movies, but will not
- write MPEG movies.
-
- +o SSSSoooouuuunnnnddddFFFFiiiilllleeeerrrr((((1111)))):::: Graphical tool for converting between
- different sound file formats. Supports the same formats
- supported by sfconvert(1). Does not include support for
- audio compression. MediaConvert is the recommended
- graphical tool for sound file conversion.
-
- We intend to unify the functionality of these tools in a
- future IRIS Digital Media Tools release. For example, it
- would probably make sense to roll the functionality of
- MovieConvert into MediaConvert and obsolete the former tool.

- This section lists problems in Media Convert and ways to
- work around them.
-
- +o MediaConvert does not carry certain AIFF/AIFF-C header
- chunks (text chunks, marker chunk, comments chunk,
- instrument chunk, MIDI data chunk, application specific
- chunk) along from the input file to the output file.
-
- Workaround: use the tools aifcresample(1),
- aiff2aifc(2), aifc2aiff(1), aifccompress(1),
- aifcdecompress(1) to convert between AIFF/AIFF-C files.
